Breaking The Rules

The other day I was folding laundry and watching HGTV. Real exciting, I know. The show was the 25 Biggest Landscaping Mistakes. Most of what they were saying made sense to me. However, for some reason Lucky # 13 really stood out in my mind: Scattered Color. Here is a glimpse of one of our many flower beds…

The voice on the television said, “You don’t want your yard to look like a box of crayons exploded." My first thought was OOOPS. Then 2 seconds later I came to my senses and thought to myself, who are these people? What’s wrong with a little bit (or a lot of) color? My whole world looks like a box of crayons exploded all over it. Probably because our 6 year old is an artist in training, and she is very generous when it comes to sharing her masterpieces. To me, they are the most beautiful sights in the world, even when they are scattered all over the house.
Today my 3 year old and I hit the dollar store, another favorite for the little people at our house. This time I found a treasure for me – a cute little turquoise vase. As soon as we got home he wanted to go pick some flowers. At our house we have such an abundance of flora, there aren’t any rules against picking flowers. We went outside and picked an armful and then proceded to fill the vase up with the colorful little renegades. It was looking kind of crowded, but he didn’t want to leave any of them out saying, “I want the whole rainbow." Wow. You bet, you sweet little boy! I could never deny him the whole rainbow, even a tasteless scattered one. Being happy is what it's all about, and he deserves it. Don’t we all?

I love this post. I'm so sick of the so-called experts. All the colors in my garden are exactly what make me so happy when I pull up. I love pink but if it was just a big sea of pink....well what fun would that be without a little orange, blue, yellow and green?? What do the experts know?? I also enjoy a good pair of white shoes AFTER labor day. :)

Every time they have one of those "rules" shows on HGTV I think I'm breaking at least half of them! I've stopped listening to most of the people on there since I don't usually like the stuff they come up with anyway. I think color in a garden is nice! It gives sort of a cottage garden feel.

My Mama said, Always be "Be true to thine own self..." and so has yours! If you want the beautiful rainbow of color ... Then go for it! Do what makes you happy! I am so glad beautiful L and little D has great taste and loves lots of color too. We are a colorful bunch aren't we?:)

Hugs!

My very favorite flower beds are the ones with exploding colors. And you are one of the best gardeners I know. I'll take your expertise any day.

I so agree with you. I go to every garden store in a 20 mile radius in the spring and buy a variety of shades of pink impatiens - I like the blending of all the shades in my garden. I know it's not the "rules" but I like it.

I couldn't agree more! Those kind of rules drive me crazy! What exactly is wrong with a box of crayons especially when you're talking about flowers?

God made them all and they all look beautiful together. I have a feeling that I would love your flower beds. Let's see some pictures!!!

And I'm glad to hear that you're wearing a big, dorky grin today. I just love big, dorky grins. :-)

You have the cutest kid. I subbed in nursery today and he was my bud. The other kids were making me 'chocolate chip cookies' out of play-doh...and Drew made me a "blueberry cupcake' all by himself. I pretended to eat it and I said "Oh man, that was the BEST blueberry cupcake I have ever had!" Nat, you should have seen his eyes light up. He got the most adorable look on his face - just a huge grin... It actually made me tear up a little. He is super cute and such a sweet, special kid. :)
