Bloggers Quilt Festival: French Dreams Quilt

I have been doing some experimental quilting...scary times at the Hideaway House.

The ingredients:
  • 3 floral print night gowns found on Clearance sale at Old Navy (size XXL for more fabric). Please, tell me I am not the only one who occasionally purchases an odd clothing item for the fabric alone!
  • 1 polka dot sheet set found on Clearance sale at Target (you've seen it before and you'll be seeing it again)
  • 1 Simply Shabby curtain panel (forgot to take a before picture)
  • A Michael Miller Eiffel Tower print that was sent to me by mistake, and I was told to keep it (Bonus!)

  • A few of my on hand favorite solids (Ash, Celery and another gray)

  • One very questionable (& rough) pattern drawn up by yours truly.  Its reliability had never been proven, hence all of the pre-stated ugly step-sister fabric selections.  In other words, I didn't want to risk the good stuff (me, of so little faith!)

Mix them all together...

The result, although not perfect, is better than expected for an experiment!

Next time I try this pattern, I might even risk the good stuff.
Although, I must admit, these motley fabrics are kind of growing on me.

The name, French Dreams, is in honor of its nightie origins, with a little dash of Eiffel thrown in the mix. :)

Ooh La La.

Really lovely--the dark blue realty makes everything pop.
I love hunting for fabric at unorthodox places. Found some good stuff at a yard sale this summer.

Oh my goodness! That is genius! :o) I need to keep my eyes open for as large as I can find, and on clearance. :o) Such sweet fabrics in your quilt. :o)

Beautiful! I like the fabrics, especially the dark navy blue with the flowers. And no, you are not the only one who buys clothes to use them in patchwork. I once bought a pack of men´s boxer shorts because of the nice fabrics. :-)

I would never have thought of using "clothing" fabric.
You are so creative.

Holy moly! I love it! What a great pattern. Are you going to sell it or make a tutorial?

I bought a ton of old 70s house coats for the fabrics. The lady running the estate sale looked at me all kinds of crazy.

Such fun, don't know whether I like the story of its birth or the fabric more!

Looks like a pretty successful experiment to me! A happy quilt, for sure. :) Does the fact that it worked out mean you're going to make it again, with "real" fabrics?

It's cute, I like it! I've never thought about making a quilt out of nighties and the like but I'm digging the idea of using sheets as backings.

Great you were able to see your design to fruition. It's also great you found unusual ways to get the fabric to use in it. Thanks for sharing and have a great day

Great pattern! It kind of looks like bras. I often buy thrift shop XL men's shirts for fabric, but hadn't thought of buying nighties. Thanks for the tip!

Congrats on making a quilt of your own design! You are not the only one to buy unconventional fabric items! I esp. love items from Target.

I save clothes to use the fabric and I buy good clothing at garage sales when it looks like something I can use. Great use of fabric...thanks for sharing with us.

Wow! your work is soooo beautiful!

My Mom used to do that.

Plus alot of Grannies I knew back then did them.

Church ladies have started again.
I am a Grannie now but I am not a handy lady like this.

I buy clearance items and antique textiles / clothing (in excellent condition, usually) for the fabric alone, quite often! Love your quilt idea, too; thanks for sharing.
